My final comment on this thread.
As someone who founded and ran a not for profit art and music foundation
(and ran it for three years), I can certainly relate to the idea of only
being in it for the fun of it. HOWEVER, the people who create consistently
deserve to make a living at it (if the public finds the quality worth
buying). These folks work hard to provide us with source materials for our
campaigns, and if they can make a living doing so then they can provide us
with more material.
I for one believe that denigration of "money motivation," is only
appropriate when that seems to be the only motivation. 3e has allowed me to
expand my baseline of materials giving me time to write storyline that was
previously used doing system to system conversions (Our campaigns have
always been multiplanar and utilize Gamma World and other systems as well as
DND).
I am not a fan of Magic: The Virus, but I don't think anyone can deny that
d20 has massively expanded the range of raw materials that I can use by
creating a boom in the quantity and quality of game gear out there.
NOW, can we please return to SJ as the main topic? I think anyone interested
in this thread is computer literate enough to take it off the list for
private discussion. Just remember, if you were the author of material that
was being pirated and were short on your rent how would you feel?
