I was thinking of the tatoos not being there for visual recognition between
illithids, but rather as a way of magically enhancing the abilities of the
ones that were tatooed.  The tatoos would create a spelllike effect,
creating different abilities that only certain castes are allowed to have.
And of course a useful side effect would be that non-illithids in the know
would be able to tell the difference between the castes.
