An alternate twist on shells:

..., thus it has been proven that crystal shells are a non-physical entity
of the highest magnitude.  This designation entails the complete lack not
only of physical and spiritual matter but also of resonation conduits to
source portals for the same....
...Such absences are caused by the existence of a potential energy well
around the source portals coorelated to the adhesive and synnemic properties
of resonance conduits by which they form a celtic knot pattern throughout
wildspace....
...Upon reaching the crystal shell one finds that propagation of matter and
energy is no longer supported, creating a sensation of absolutely
unbreachable hardness.  But since the resonation conduits are sparse here
even the weak and unenlightened magics of coin-shaving, skinflint Arcane can
bend them to form time portals into the extra-spacial, pseudo-temporal
betweenspace sometimes called the pholgiston.  So easy is this task that
more active systems have naturally occuring phlogiston portals at their rim.
