Subject: Re: Gladius Sphere by Lea Hall
These are the files I originally sent to my group as
we got into the Cosmology of the Sphere they found
themselves in. There have been a few other notes but I
can't locate them curently. As I said before, this
system was generated randomly. It has a central Fire
body named Soliel which is considered the 'sun'
because it is the brightest firebody in the sphere. I
have misplaced the size but I think it was a size J.
Because my players had no clue about size
classifications, I typed up the size chart.
_____________________________________________
Size A=Less than 10 miles across
Size B=From 10-100 miles across
Size C=From 100 to 1000 (1K) miles across
Size D=From 1-4 K across
Size E From 4-10 K across
Size F=From 10-40 K across
Size G=From 40- 100 K across
Size H=From 100 to 1000 K (1 M)across
Size I=From 1-10 M across
Size J=10 M across or greater

Examples:
Type H, Spherical Fire Sun
Type D, Spherical, Earth, Mercury (i was wrong)
Type E, Spherical, Earth, Venus
Type E, Spherical, Earth, Earth
Type E, Spherical, Earth, Mars
Type A, Belt, Earth, Ateroid Belt
Type G, Spherical, Air, Jupiter (wrong again)
Type G, Spherical, Air, Saturn
Type F, Spherical, Air, Uranus
Type F, Spherical, Air, Neptune
Type D, Irregular, Earth, Pluto
Type A, Belt, Air, Cometary Belt

according to the Concordance of Arcane Space, Sidebar,
p. 42.

1.Bragar is an Earth Type, Size D Spherical with three
rings of water (Fresh, salty and brackish). The main
Spelljamming port is an asteroid base floating in the
brackish ring by the name of D'Caleth.

2.Marusinal, a water type, Size C, Flatworld with a
cluster of Asteroids that are all settled. Marusinal
does have a few large island masses floating upon its
flat face but the predominant culture of the planet is
underwater. The Aquatic Elves trade from Mokue Island
and are reputed to have tinned fish, which do not
spoil for sale, which is very useful for long voyages.

3.Connatra, the third planet is a size F Earth type
Spherical with a ring of frozen water, which makes the
planet icy. The cold from the ice ring even affects
weather patterns on the Gladius Belt, causing cold
weather and snowstorms to occur in the air world.

4.The cold from the third planet's ice ring affects
weather patterns on the Gladius Belt, causing cold
weather and snowstorms to occur in the air world.
The Gladius Belt is the 4th planet out, but instead of
a spherical planet, the planet is an air belt, which
completely encircles the primary 250 million miles out
from the Primary Soliel. The predominant culture
involves gladiatorial resolution of conflict. These
arenas are called the Gladius.
Intrinsic to the socio-political reality of the
Gladius is the political Unit which represents 10
individuals, their diplomat and their champion
(Gladiator or Animal handler/beast). Presumably, these
10 people have banded together to gain a political
voice in their governance. In order to register their
political name, an individual must get a Truename
Glyph registered. This is done by obtaining the uses
of a Geometer Thaumaturge who will determine the
essences and chemicals needed for the truename ink.
Once the truename ink is prepared, a drop upon the
fingertip will allow the person to 'stamp' their
truename glyph onto an official document.
Each of the twelve regions of the Gladius Belt has a
special yearly contest called the Gladius Games. It is
the results of these games that confirm the political
power wielded by the diplomats. These are the results
of many individual and group conflicts. During the
final days before this yearly event occurs, every
political Unit must pay it's yearly fee, which goes
into the Gladius Fund, and as each conflict is
resolved, the Gladiator and his Unit get a monetary
reward or purse from this fund, often given in Gems or
Jewelry. This purse also includes a portion of the
gambling results on the Gladius Games. The government
uses a portion of the Account as Taxes and fees. If
your truename is registered, that means you have paid
your taxes for the year. Those without a truename have
no voice in politics and are sometimes considered 2nd
class citizens. In order to protest effectively, you
must join the system. Gladiators are the exception to
this, as they do not have to be registered by their
truename, but they gain a measure of respect and fame
from their Gladius fights. They are the celebrities
sought for parties and festivities, and since they
also represent 10-10 of thousands by their fights.

5.Beyond the Gladius belt we find a fire world
Xinthus, which is Size F, Spherical with a ring of
earth encircling it. The surface of Xinthus is lava,
with floating islands of earth.Heat loving and fire
dwelling creature are the predominant races. The earth
ring above the surface is a torus and the outer part,
away from the planet holds spacefaring cities. The
proximity of Xinthus to Gladius creates the summer
conditions for hat airworld. When both Connatra and
Xinthus are nearby, the weather patterns are
unpredictable, and spelljamming ships tend to avoid
the area due to excessive winds and thunderstorms.
Spelljamming craft were not made to deal with the
airspeeds and pressures caused by these storms.

6.Continuing outward there is an icy world called
Telakka which is Size C, sphericle and has a vaccumn.
Spacefarers have no bases here, and it is generally
avoided. Spacefarers foolish enough to land on this
planet may find their air being sucked away. It is
reputed that there may be treasure to be found from
just such a foolish adventurer or two not making it
off the planet. Wiser heads avoid attempting to enter
a vaccumn world.

7.An air world Morriah is the seventh planet, it is
actually a cluster of air planetoids, which are
individually type A, but overall this cluster holds an
I classification. Each of the individual worlds has
its own culture although there are elements of the
Gladius culture here as well. Morriahans are well
known for their entering of various enormous airbeasts
into the Gladius games.

8.Amazing in it's complexity and astonishing in its
existence, The Zharree water belt is a size G belt.
There are 10 major earth bodies within the belt, and
2-8 'ribbons' of water streams flow between the large
islands. Each ribbon has a width of 1 to 10 miles
across, a slightly rounded edge and a depth of 30-50
feet. at the halfway point between the faces is a band
of material, mud, rocks and debris. This is on the
gravity plane. Each of the ten large islands has a
'swollen' area where the water pools around the
landmasses, akin to a sea. Ships on these ribbons
usually do not exceed 100 foot in length because
longer ships cannot sail around the curve from one
side of the planet to the other. Most of the natives
of this world have a nomadic ship borne lifestyle.
Rivers between one island and the next are the homes
of many sailing cultures. Storms are frequent but
easily avoided by a spacefaring ship. The unique
nature of the ribbon makes the air nvelope stop at 30
to 50 feet up, so escape is quick if needed. In fact
missile weapons from the surface has been known to
threaten spaceborne craft.

9.The ninth planet, MonoTakaRhee is actually a cluster
of earth bodies, the largest three being Mono, Taka,
and Rhee. These three are also represent the three
predominant political entities. This world holds it's
own version of the Gladius games, and sends
representatives from each of the major cultures to the
Gladius Games held at Gladius Prime once a year and
they then get a vote in the Ruling body of the Gladius
Belt..

10.The tenth planet out, Kaluf, is not visited by many
Spacefarers, and only the Elven Navy travels there
frequently. It is rumored that the planet is a prison
planet, and it is certain that Spelljammers are not
welcome. Those who have gotten close have reported
that even though it appears spherical from space, the
planet actually takes on more of a regularly sided
some might even say faceted appearance from nearby.
There are three moons and the Elven naval base is on
the largest of these. Particularly damaged craft have
been allowed to do repairs at this base but they
reported they were always being watched.

11.The 11th is Trofuth, which is a size E Fire body,
spherical and appears more dull orange than the bright
red of Soliel, and the amount of light is much less,
Trofuth is also called the nightsun because it is
visible in the dark night sky during certain times of
the year and makes ultravision more reliable but it
does not cast enough light to read by for those with
normal vision.

12.The 12th planet Mairee is a major shipping port to
other Spheres, as well as host to many Shipping
Costers and Guilds. The Elven Navy's presence here is
concentrated around an enormous banyan type tree that
floats on 17 individual islands all interconnected by
this tree. Also other ports of call can be made here,
and there are a number of asteroids both inside the
planetary atmosphere, and just outside on individual
moonlets.

13. Feth, a fire type world which is irregular, in
fact, the world appear like a gigantic amoeba, and
flows across space with a hot blue light, which is
marked by prominences which cool into the red and
white spectra. Omen readers, and philosophers both
find Feth to be an important planet. The shapes and
way it moves give omen readers much to work from, and
the philosophers debate whether Feth was once a fire
belt that broke and collapsed in on itself, or whether
the planet is in fact sentient and alive. One moon
orbits this world and it is home to yet another Elven
Fleet Base.

14. The furthest fire body is Kushor, a flatworld,
size F. Only the curved side of Kushor is bright
(Yellow) the flat side being an intense black. The
8-hour rotation is not called a day, but instead,
corresponding to the shipboard watch schedule, it is
called a watch. The beginning of the watch is when the
first rays of yellow light become visible after the
flat side starts to turn away from where you are
observing this along the major planetary plane. From
above or below it appear to be a half circle
rotating..
