OOC:

Apologies for the slightly off-topic post for some of the lists!

I am starting a new PBEM game, Ethereal Gothic and need some players.

Ethereal Gothic is set in the conjoined worlds of GDW's 'Space:1889'
and TSR's 'Masque of the Red Death'. The game utilizes the GURPS
rulesystem, especially GURPS Steampunk and GURPS Horror. The game is
inspired by the works of Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allen Poe,
Arthur Conan Doyle, H.G. Wells, and Jules Verne. I suspect some H.P.
Lovescraft will sneak in as well. Plus plenty of Tarzan and John
Carter of Mars! More recent inspirations include the _Mummy_ movies,
the Indiana Jones movies, Coppola's _Bram Stoker's Dracula_, _Sleepy
Hollow_, the Flashman novels, and of course 'The League of
Extraordinary Gentleman' (the comic, not the movie). In other words,
Victorian Sci-Fi and Victorian Horror with some humor thrown in. :)

The game will begin once I've got enough players to start, after I
have my other games back up and running smoothly after the move. I
will be using much of the background and information from my tabletop
game, but those players shouldn't feel like they will be simply
repeating adventures! Basically, I'm fixing the mistakes I made
before! :)

I use game material from Space:1889, Ravenloft: Masque of the Red
Death (aka Gothic Earth), Dark Sun (to beef up Martian culture) and a
few other source books (GURPS Horror, GURPS Steampunk, Amazing
Engine: For Faerie, Queen, and Country).

The game will start in January, 1889. It will likely move between
Earth, Mars, and Venus. Players will be working with/for an eccentric
British scholar, Dr. Hawthorne, who will direct them on
investigations and explorations. PCs should be adults, they are being
gather by Dr. Hawthorne as a sort of 'Adventurers League', and have
at least some experience already. The game will start at Hawthorne's
ancestral home on the Cornish coast of England.

If you are interested in playing, please send me (offlist!) a one to
three paragraph sketch of your proposed PC. I'll send you back some
comments on your proposed PC's suitability, as well as the post
detailing character creation rules. This way I can head off problem
PCs before the player has devoted hours to creating them.

The game is set in a Victorian world, but race, gender, and class
will not stand in the way of adventuring. Players may be Human, Canal
Martian, or Hill Martian. Human characters may be of any nationality.
One or two PCs might have some supernatural knowledge, but most
should not.

Some possible PC 'types' (just to help folks along, this list is not
intended to limit potential PC creativity!): American Gunfighter,
Retired British Army officer, Australian rancher, Big Game Hunter,
Arachaeologist, Inventor, Zeppelin/Ethership pilot, Secret Witch,
Holmes-style Detective, a Doctor, Chinese Monk-Martial artist, Canal
Martian noble, Hill Martian warrior, French Aristocrat, American
Indian Tracker, and so forth...

I've created a yahoogroup for running the game, you can join by
sending an email to this address:

etherealgothic-subscribe@???????????.com

Lurkers are welcome! I have set the list so that my permission is
required to join, to keep out spammers. sending an email to the above
address will start the process automatically. I'll then send on off
list email to confirm the potential member isn't an automated spam
producing address, and then add you in.

Useful Websites

The game will use the GURPS engine. The GURPs Lite rules are the min
required for the game, and are available for free download from the
GURPS home page.

Heliograph, Inc still sells Space:1889 products, plus has lots of
free articles on the system (include a couple by yours truly) up
under TRMGS.

The RPGA's Living Death page is the best source for Masque of the Red
Death information.

This is a great Space:1889 site, though the background image makes
the text difficult to read. Highlight the text and it is much easier.

These two sites, 'Major-General Tremorden Reddering's Colonial
wargames page' and 'Adventures of the Red Shadow', are simply great
for atmosphere, and a looks at some really cool colonial wargame
miniature games.

"...And nobody is to be killed at all, if it can be helped. Keep your
tempers and hold your hands until the last possible moment!"
"But if there are many of these ruffians," said Merry, "it will
certainly mean fighting. You won't rescue Lotho, or the Shire, just
by being shocked and sad, my dear Frodo."
