I agree, when you consider the large number of ships based on terrestrial fish and waterborne mammals it would seem a logical assumption that Spelljammers have a liking for fish. In my campaign, I rolled up a random crystal sphere to base the couple of areas that I wanted to adventure in, and ended up with a water belt called the Zharre Belt as the 8th world. There are large numbers of fish there and considering the vastness of the area covered, I could adventure there for decades and never see it all. As a Belt, the water has certain characteristics which I suppose are unique to this water belt. Water pools around the ten large earth bodies and forms oceans there, but flows as water ribbons across space between these oceans. Each ribbon has a central gravity plane and a flow pattern. Ships longer than 125 foot cannot sail around the edges because the ship will sink and be absorbed into the ribbon with the ends sticking out on either side. Each ribbon side is between 30 and 50 feet deep, making the entire ribbon of water 60 to 100 feet from top surface to the other top surface. Dirt and debris accumulates between the two at the plane of gravity, usually making an opaque layer at the middle. The Zharre Belt exports fish and sea grown edibles including edible seaweed and crustations. It is one of the largest producers of food in my sphere. As the Zharre Belt is considered the furthest out of any major 'civilised port', the ten major land masses offer a good place to find Spelljammers and their ships. Smaller land masses form small islands and Spelljammers have been known to get some great deals here, and to suffer some great losses as well. Piracy is well known and when carried out by water breathing races, can be quite deadly. Many Spelljamming ships will choose to fly out of the belt area and manuever in space than return to the Belt so as to avoid the attack of their ship from below. I will try to write up the whole sphere and post it here, (actually I have posted it to my group and I am just too tired to search for the files right now).
