An attack on their home village/town might work.  Perhaps early catapult or 
fireball strikes smashed the local garrison, wizards' tower, and/or temple.  
The PCs are among the few remaining, have to dig out other survivors.  Loved 
ones could have been taken off (as sacrifices for dark religious rites or merely 
as slaves), as well as (for the more unscrupulous PCs) those who happen to owe 
them large sums of money.  The PCs have to pursue, and are the only ones who 
can...
