Say, you've got a point about the tonnage.... according to canon, something
attached by a rope *does* count against the tonnage. That's why towing with
spelljammers is tricky and can be unsafe, for example.

Hmm.... I don't know geometry well enough to figure how a ship's air
envelope affects its tonnage, beyond the obvious. Canon materials cover the
*sizes* of envelopes thoroughly, while *variant* envelopes are mentioned
only once that I remember.

But I tend to agree that a water envelope should have some kind of effect...
but couldn't say what it might be, exactly. LOL My thinking is along the
same lines as yours - that much water is HEAVY, far heavier than the same
amount of air. Even with a spelljammer helm, I'm seriously doubting that a
ship could simply ignore it.

The whole thing is a tangent, of course, but who knows - someone might pop a
module into Dungeon with this idea sometime, if Dungeon accepts SJ
submissions (I don't know; don't subscribe). A wreck drifting in space with
an air envelope filled with water could be a startlingly different
site-based adventure, for example. The issue we're discussing would be
important if the PCs tried to *move* it....  hehehe And imagine swimming in
binary gravity! :)
