>From: Alfred O'Meagher <nineunknown@???????.com> >I just think that there is a double standard. About four manufacturers seem >to get unlimited advertising on this list, and in fact their shillmail >currently outnumbers normal traffic. Not good. I've been busy the last few months with minor things like getting a new job, moving my family 1100 miles to work it, and welcoming a new son into the world, so I may very well have missed some posts :)... but I don't recall ever seeing a prohibition against other companies' products getting recommended on the list. Trampas wasn't posting an add to the list, he was informing other SJ fans of a potential source, and asking for other folks opinions. I don't play d20, myself, so without his post I might have not thought to look at that book. besides, Trampas doesn't work for those folks, I believe, so it isn't advertising, it's review and discussion! :) >Anyone who wants to can find any number of appropriate books for d20 that >can be used for Spelljammer. Or just buy all the Spelljammer stuff they >don't have as appalling quality PDFs from SVGames or RPGNOW. So let's get >over it and move on. No-one needs ads on the list. And it irritates me as an >independent publisher to see works, some of which have plagiarised me >amongst others getting pushed in preference to the above position. If you publish something, a note letting us know would be fine and welcome, I believe. Not sure about the PDF quality having not purchased one yet, but are they really so bad that folks don't recommend buying them? That's something I would like to know about, and discussing the quality of the SJ PDF downloads would be great. If anyone has purchased them, please speak up! >Also, if there's no proper discussion on this list, what's the point? Newer >members seem to get ignored, and I am NOT in the cult of the websites pushed >by list gawds. :) If not for Beyond the Moons, SJ would be gone long ago:) You say new people get ignored, have you posted lately? Again, I've been swamped so I may have missed it. Most lists go through lulls, and SJ has never been extremely busy. My own SJ posting has declined considerably because of real life, though i hope to revivie it as I settle into my new job. Please, post your ideas! There are one or two rude folk on the list who tend to attack, I admit, but generally the list is very accepting. At least, IMO. If someone is rude, don't respond, and those of us who want to encourage new members will try to send you encouraging messages! >I don't see anything of any huge interest on those sites, and >if I wanted to just cruise sites I could use the Google tool bar to my >heart's content. Is there anything left to discuss or collaborate on? Well, I was running several Unique Spelljammer contests and got very few entries. I'll repost the announcements and extend them for one more month (I'm very behind on judging anyway because of my move and son) They do end up on Beyond the Moons, but they are designed to not only provide a permanent resource but also discussion on the list! >If >not, it's time for this list to sail off beyond the farthest star. Well, I'd suggest one members dissatisfaction is no cause for the rest of us to close up shop. Stick around, and post some. We will never be as busy as the FR list (thank goodness!) but we can have some cool debates! :) -- "...And nobody is to be killed at all, if it can be helped. Keep your tempers and hold your hands until the last possible moment!" "But if there many of these ruffians," said Merry, "it will certainly mean fighting. You won't rescue Lotho, or the Shire, just by being shocked and sad, my dear Frodo." Paul Westermeyer, westermeyer.3@???.edu Phd Candidate, History, Ohio State University
