I picked up the Arms and Equipment Guide a couple weeks ago, and it has
some interesting ideas on vehicle design. In particular, vehicles in the
A&EG use the same size categories as characters and monsters. Plush,
Huge, Gargantuan, and Colossal vehicles are comprised of numerous 10' by
10' by 10' sections. There are rules for ship combat and damage,
turning, movement, and collisions. There are areas which need
improvement, such as a lack vehicle design rules (e.g. how many sailors
are required for a wind-powered vehicle), but I think the book as some
pretty good material. To fill in the gaps, I created some supplemental
material for my own use, but if you'd like I'll send along what I wrote.
It's in Word though, and I don't know how this list deals with
attachments.

Anyways in the spirt of the ship design challenge, I created a stat
block for the Illithid Lance using the new 3e vehicle rules. Obviously
this is an unofficial entry.

Illithid Lance

Size: Colossal-sized vehicle[1]
Skill: Profession (spacer)
Speed: +10 feet per series helmsman (7 helms total, max speed 70 feet)
Maneuverability: Good[2]
Sections: 30
Section Armor Class: +2 / +33
Section Hit Points: 40 (hardness 6) / 50 (hardness 5)[4]
Rigging: 80 hp, AC +1 (hardness 0)[5]
Ram: 12d6
Face: 150 feet by 20 feet
Height: 20 feet (keel to top deck)
Crew: 12/30[6]
Cargo: 150 tons[7]
Empty Weight: 90,000 lbs (45 tons)[8]
Fast Play AC: +5
Fast Play HP: 270 (hardness 11)
Landing: water, land*
Standard Armament:
1 medium ballista (fore/port/starboard)
1 mind lance

* Technically, the ship hovers
1. Vehicles in the A&EG use standard character size categories 2. A&EG
flying vehicles also use standard in-flight maneuverability categories.
3. AC listed is for armor, followed by a slash, followed by hull AC. 4.
Hit points listed is for armor, followed by a slash, followed by hull
hit points. Hardness is listed in parenthesis, and hit points take into
account thickness of the material (in this case, 2 inches of ceramics
and 5 inches of wood). 5. Rigging counts as one section in the A&EG
rules. 6. Non-standard for A&EG. Number after the slash lists maximum
crew capacity that can safely breathe the retained atmosphere for one
month (assuming they use the air paint magical augmentation). 7. A&EG
lists cargo capacity in tons by weight, not volumetric tons like in
Spelljammer. 8. Empty Weight is not a standard statistic for ships, but
I decided it might come in handy. The ceramic armor weighs 60,000
pounds, while the wooden hull weighs 30,000 pounds. These weights take
into account all 30 ship sections.
