It's always been that way, when it first appeared in the Champions of
Mystara boxed set.  IIRC, the way around it was that the gun was a
disentegration cannon that had its point of firing ahead of the mast (aka it
fires from a point outside the gun :) )

I was looking tonight at the Warbird ship deckplans and noticed something
that made me laugh alot! What I noticed is the bombard is located in such a
way that it would blow apart the main mast of the Warbird ship! LOLROF
So if you not checked it out yet take a look and see what I mean! By the way
I love the ship, hopefully the bombard deck is able to rotate somehow
otherwise the ship will lose its mast every time!
