It never made any sense that they loose there powers if they leave the
Underdark. Of coarse it is not as stupid as that Greyhawk rule that
gunpowder does not work (that has got to be the most asinine rule in D&D
IMHO)

huh? have they changed them again?  (i well remember the change of
drow from Greyhawk to FR--that's when the "they lose their powers
when they leave the underdark" thing first showed up.)
