By the way, is the name intentionally similar to the term dowager (a
matronly old woman, or thereabouts) and duergar, the existing monster (evil
dwarves)?

Because, when I red Dowagar, I really think dowager. And it makes it very
much less threatening. I start to imagine a hulking, nearly invisible
shadow-monster having teaparties and playing bridge.
