Profession is usually interpreted to mean an actual, defined group with
prerequisite skill-sets, levels of skill, and so on.  Lawyers, doctors,
nurses, (some) engineers, US Military, and a very few other groups fall
into this definition in the US.  Certifications of some sort (and not
just the I can use MS or Linux or whatever certifications) are usually
a establishment.  Of course, that's the full up technical definition.
The average use of the word tends to be someone who makes a career of
it (note that now profession refers to the individual and not a group
or to standards).  Of course this all breaks down in the military realm
when one realizes how "skill" and level thereof are actually handled...
