It depends on what you want to accomplish.  Since this would be a
Prestige Class, I assume you would have a specific organization tied to
the class.  Something like a Merchant Prince of Bral prestige class,
for instance.  The Minothrad Guilds accessory for the Known World
setting of Mystara has a merchant-type class called the Merchant
Prince.  It is an exclusive organization, but once membership is
acquired, the character gains access to particular spells that are
desirable and beneficial for a merchant on the open seas.  Weather
control type spells especially.

Something to consider might be special companions or cohorts.
Space navigation spell-like powers.
Ship and crew enhancement supernatural abilities
Access to a unique organization of like-talented merchants.

This type of merchant would want to keep their secrets very exclusive,
and membership would be strictly monitored.
