In regards to 3rd ed. feeling. I myself stick to the older editions. 3rd ed., is very interesting but it has a manga-feeling to it, the heroes are mega powerful, the monsters, in turn, are EVEN more powerful and so and so... The feeling of the play is more like an playstation rpg, than the usual table playing. If you re-read some of the monster set in the 1st Non-Human war, like the bionoids, this manga-feeling can be quite appropriate. However, i find the spirit of spelljammer more like "weird", with a mix of medieval and 1600s heroes, with a mercantile aspect to it. The lower level of play, and harder progression of levels of the old editions sound better to me for an exploration type game than the escalating power of 3rd edition. I must remark that 3rd ed, style is very good for more linear story lines, with set villains and a lot of preparation by DMs. Helpful? :)
