Possibly, but very few PCs would know what to look for.

With the proper magical devices (providing air, food, water), he could do it
on a 1/2 hull point locust.  He'd be nuts to do it, but if he wants...

Probably, but, again, most PCs aren't going to be familiar enough with
illithids to do so.
