Is it a cut gem? What type of gem? Is it flawed?

Of course, the type of gem will have a direct effect on the value. Some gems
have occult significance. A watermelon sized gem that can-say-be used to
ward off evil spirits might be very valuable in the hands of the right
people. If I were them, I might just donate it to a temple though-sounds
like it could garner some good favor for them.

If it isn't cut, in some cases it will be worth more than if it is-the cut
of a gem affects its price. If it's flawed it will be worth considerably
less (the reverse of what we have today because of lab-created gems); Larger
flaws means less money, so it would be best to cut smaller gems out of it.

They should go to someone who's an expert at this rather than doing it
themselvses, as the skill of the jeweller will change the price. Of course,
a jeweller may not trust themselves with a gem of that size and obvious
value... A jeweller would also be able to help them appraise it.
