Encounter 5: Oppol took his ship to the nearest town (possibly the
only town at the DMs discretion) in the asteroid field and got lucky.
The town is a small agricultural port. It was basically defenseless
when the kobolds arrived but the two groups have come to an
accommodation (an accommodation not liked by everyone in town). When
the kobolds arrived in their ship they outmatched the town^Òs only
defense, a wreckboat. Oppol threatened to bombard the town until it
was destroyed unless they did as he said and a hasty negotiation was
set up between him and the town mayor. It was during this negotiation
that both mayor and chief found they had similar interests in
increasing their power and they came to an arrangement. The kobolds
and the mayor have formed an alliance and the main local church has
been made to go along with it. The agreement even allows the kobolds
to construct warrens under the town and provides them with slaves.
With the local power structure behind him, Oppol is sticking around to
have his forces better equipped, gather supplies, and cement his hold.
He will then take some of the slaves back to the Thunderspear clan and
so cement his hold in the region. He is also hoping a ship drops by so
that he can take control of it, building his fleet. The town^Òs only
vessel (and only space defense) was a nonmagical engine equipped
wreckboat (it does mount a medium ballista). The kobold^Òs wasp ship,
renamed the Blackspear, is the only vessel at the town^Òs port. The
rest of the module is very open and can be navigated through a large
amount of roleplaying and little combat or a bunch of direct combat and
little roleplaying. Read through the following carefully before
continuing as the PCs are entering what could become a min-campaign in
itself.
PCs observing the asteroid the town is on from afar (probably through
spells or a spyglass) will find it to be arid and covered in grasses
with some grains and a few small orchards and lone trees dotting its
surface. Much of the asteroid, which is over 8 miles long, 5 miles
wide, and up to 1.5 miles thick, is uncultivated land. Individual farm
buildings dot the surface on both sides with a single port town at one
end. A docks protrudes from the asteroid and there is a landing field
beside it for small ships that can land on land and don^Òt wish to hang
on the gravity plane. The docks are actually over 100 yards below the
town set in the uneven cliff face that is side of the asteroid. A
wreckboat is the only ship at the docks and a wasp ship is landed in
the landing field. The asteroid rotates on its long axis in a standard
24 hour rotation. PCs have the option of approaching the town (a bad
idea) or approaching the far side of the asteroid and making contact
with a farm. As there are no watch towers or dedicated watchers any
circumspect or relatively stealthy approach will avoid notice from the
town (note that the new guard members drill on the docks daily and the
kobolds mount a lazy watch here at night so an obvious approach will
probably be noticed).
