Hello All
Here is my entry to the 3e npc contest.
Obsidian
Obsidian is an earth genasi sired by a summoned dao and his
sorcerress human mother. He was born on Radole, his mother exiled to the
planet and left to die for her crimes. His father keep both mother and
son alive but not lift a hand to rescue them as obsidian's mother had
hoped when she had summoned the dao.
Years passed and he had a few adventures on Radole. It was at this
time he learned his fighting skills from an exiled adventurer named Ula.
His last adventure on Radole was an encounter with the dragonfly ship
sundancer as it landed in the hot zones of Radole looking for motten
metals that lay near its surface, hoping to get some precious metals
from skimming it surface (they had specially treated equipment for such
'mining'). It is here when Obsidian's spelljamming adventures started.
>From the start, Obsidian's attitude almost got him stranded on Radole
even before the ship took off into wildspace (He is known for one of his
'endearing' remarks "Kiss my ..."). He found that he liked being a
marine aboard the sundancer. While he has proven to be a valuable
marine, it seems trouble follows Obsidian wherever he travels.
While visiting a spelljammer port he got into trouble with the law
when he started to deface idols and images of gods (in his mind where
were the gods when his mother prayed to be spared the fate of being
exiled to the lousy planet of Radole). He was arrested and spent some
time in prison, after he finished his sentence, the local preisthood
quested Obsidian to obtain a prized jewel that was stolen from the
temple and return it to the priesthood all in one piece and not shoved
down the throat of any priest or clergy member (actually it was worded
very carefully so Obsidian could not find a way to twist the quest).

How to Fit Obsidian into your spelljamming campaign Characters can
come across Obsidian in his quest for the sacred jewel. If they come
back to port after losing a lot of crew, the PCs might find it hard to
replace lost crew as the marines and sailors in port have come to
believe the PCs (or thier ship) is jinxed, Obsidian, being one of the
few that is not supersitious, will hire on. Obsidian is expensive to
hire as he wants either 50 gp a day or a half share of any booty with
additonal payment of 5 gp per day.
Obsidian does not like clerics one bit and will never defend one,
nor help them. If in a middle of a bar brawl Obsidian will wade into the
fray with fists flying, and if he sees a cleric .... well lets say the
cleric will have a few more bruises that day!
As to other character classes, he gets along with bards really well
as he enjoys thier songs, healing and boosting of morale. He likes any
warrior or fighter-types on board a ship. If women are on board he will
be protective of them, especially if they are wizards or sorcerers. And
if any woman shows any inclination of showing him love or affection...
well there will be hell to pay to those who attack such beauties as
Obsidian will go out of his way to punish the 'wicked'.
He does not expect healing from clerics (and will appreciate healing
from bards) and as such he uses his alchemy skill to whip up some stinky
Healing SalveT&B to have ready to cure damage from future battles he may
get into. Many adventurers find Obsidian's knowledge of alchemy and
herbalism extensive for a marine with no spellcasting ability.
One last thing, if any one really does kiss his posterior, he will
respect that person more than those who do not (they have humbled
themselves before Obsidian). He does not have any problem kissing any
posterior, except that of any priest. Yes, he is arrogant and crude!
When played correctly, most players will love to 'hate' Obsidian for
his very crude behavior. Still, Obsidian will not steal from his
employer, will be forthcoming about his disdain of clerics, and he will
not run from a fight unless the odds are overwhelming or under a magical
compulsion (such as a fear spell).

Hope you all enjoy him as much as most of my players! :D
