That would meet the fire trap conditions. Glyph of warding does not work on arrows, but a ballista bolt head, which is about the same size as a spearhead, might be big enough. Why doesn't it work on arrows anyway? I have forgotten and don't have my books with me. :) >> I was trying to come up with an idea for a harpoon that >> clamps on to something with a Wizard Lock. Your harpoon can't open and isn't part of whatever it >hits. Okay, here's a weird variation on this one - how about a Rod of Viscous Globs (which stick to anything like crazy glue) with a cable attached to one end, fired out of an accelerator after the command has been given? Remember, an accelerator will fire your hand without your body if you stick your hand into it accidentally, so why not the glob as well? Or how about sovereign glue (2E, but I can see alchemists making it) painted lightly on the head of the harpoon while its in firing position? It would be a one-shot deal, and if you missed then that would be it, but it would work. Or, you might rule that you would have to double or triple the harpoon's refiring time if your crew is taking the time to put sovereign glue on each harpoon head. You wouldn't be able to do it before that or the harpoons would stick to each other or the ship's hull. Your hull. > >> It would be interesting if one shot weapons like Javelins of >> Piercing or Javelins of Lightning were fairly common in >> some areas, because of high quality materials that allow >> larger batch production of one shot magic items. > >It's the enchanting that's the problem, not the materials (though in >some areas both will be problems). With the new magical item creation rules, I can see it! It's not that much of an experience cost for enspelled items. Imagine what retired old wizards would do with their spare time. Or, better yet, find a way to require that the one who wants the things made must channel his own life energies to do it (there is, I believe, both a feat and a spell that wizards can take that will let them do this, but damned if I remember where I got them from. I'll try to find out when I get home.) > >> And there are always means of focusing Continual Light spells >> for signalling or dazzling, or put on a ballista bolt to fire into >> an enemy ship so as to track it more easily. > >The latter tactic has been posted several times by me. Dazzling wouldn't work by the spell description, however. >Continual light has a set area of effect, regardless of what's around >it, the magic can only illuminate to a certain range. That's true, but that doesn't mean you can't SEE it from far away. :) How far does a star illuminate, so that you can use its light to see by? But how far away from the star can you be in order to see the star itself? One of the principles behind Morse code . . . (You're right, BTW, the latter tactic works nicely!) :D Yours truly, Sable PS - If nobody hears from me for 4 days, I am not ignoring you - I am just starting the trip home from Portland, Maine, to British Columbia, Canada, and it takes about 3 or 4 days by bus.
