Subject: Re: Enspelled items
What kinds of enspelled items are there out there?
An enspelled item is something that is less potent
and less permanent than a magic item. Sometimes it
is simply some natural substance with magical properties
that can be exploited. Sometimes it is a simple spell or
ritual that lasts for a long time.

Fire trap and Glyph of Warding arrows for example. (and
special carrying cases that prevent them from being
accidentally touched and discharged)

I was trying to come up with an idea for a harpoon that
clamps on to something with a Wizard Lock. It would be
stored in the open position, but when it closes on impact
the permanent magic of the wizard lock takes affect.
You could create a bunch of man traps this way as well.

As I understand the spell, the wizard lock actually strengthens
the entire door, so a harpoon with even a weak hit might
only be dislodged by serious damage to the hull.

It would be interesting if one shot weapons like Javelins of
Piercing or Javelins of Lightning were fairly common in
some areas, because of high quality materials that allow
larger batch production of one shot magic items.

A creature that lives in an area with a lot of acid spitting
creatures might have an acid proof shell that can be adapted
to hold very potent acids.

Paints, inks, lacquers could come from a variety of unlikely
sources, allowing for magical scrolls or scroll like effects
on different objects.

The material from which mana sails are made would be an
important trade commodity.

A creature with extremely sharp claws might have those
claws (or teeth) end up tipping precise engraving tools, or
surgical tools, or sewing needles.

You could have magic mirrors that enhance the effect of
certain clairvoyance spells, or magic mirror spells, allowing
for two-way communication within a sphere. Communication
would likely be in code since it could be intercepted.

Maybe an Iconograph, like Terry Pratchett's Disc World
series, perhaps using a small sized permanent phantasmal
force to capture the image. Perhaps a crystal that can
store images in a facet, such that when a narrow beam of
light is shown through it (in a darkened area), it casts
that image on the far wall.

Perhaps some kind of water elemental is trapped to power a mill.

And there are always means of focusing Continual Light spells
for signalling or dazzling, or put on a ballista bolt to fire into
an enemy ship so as to track it more easily.

Perhaps a sewer system leads to some monster which processes
the waste.

Perhaps some kinds of wood or plant are naturally animated,
and can produce some low powered continuous effect, like
fanning or pumping actions.
