Not neccessarily (in fact almost certainly not). This is why large
weapons don't always hit (whoops, I rolled an 8 on my to-hit roll, I
guess the catapult's firing pin didn't release smoothly). When they do
hit, it's either a fluke, or the weapon was adjusted just right for that
particular shot, making aiming with accuracy possible.

Well, obviously. In fact I mentioned exactly this several posts ago.

So you're basing your assumptions on the 'fact' that a large weapon will
  always be able to hit a target the size of a ship at standard ranges?
Sorry, but that's flat out wrong. Oh, and incidentally, my numbers were
based on simple geometry and angles.
