In my experience.............. play with 100 yard squares for some time
now, is that only the long range spells will have any impact on combat.
Only spells with range 400 ft. + 40/lvl will do anything outside the own
square. This sometime bugs the hell out of my players..... but the system
works.

That's a good one, then an encounter would involve much smaller distances,
twenty hexes as two thousand yards, you could see a ship the size of a
galleon for example at that range.
