I like this idea. It makes visiting strange planets more exciting if you can have atmospheric duels between ships and flying creatures, ala Flash Gordon. Say, what is the logic behind heavy ballistae and catapults having shorter ranges than light ballistae and catapults? I can see larger crew requirements and slower loading, not to mention slower to turn, but shorter range? Michael Sandy ps: I love the illustrations in Terry Pratchett's _The Last Hero_. Very cool idea for a spelljammer ship!
