Maybe a way of modifying the exisiting ships to augment their hull points, so they will still take hits but just last longer before breaking up. Also ignoring the critical hit tables might help too. Perhaps additional armour plate (at a suitably high cost) or internal reinforcements. The old ships of the line were built with very high structural strength, using massive timbers. I'm toying with perhaps small suitably trained creatures that carry out running repairs in battle. In my campaign there are Tanu and they can use their psionic devices to train/control small primates.
