I working on converting SJ 2e to SJ D20 and an ideal hit me. Please tell what you think. LeeRoy/Kiax P.S. It would not be right if I did not claim some inspiration from the Adam Miller Goblin Porcupines ship article a saw on this list. Is it on the Spelljammer website. It should be, it is one of best! The following was written for the SJD20 setting from Dungeon 92. It can be used with other settings. Not long after the Drow of the Spider Moon were driven underground they discovered that one species of native spider grew its entire life. Properly feed they would grow to monstrous proportions. They found ways to preserve the corpses after these creatures died, to make truly appropriate temples to Loth. Then came the treaty with the Mind Flayers that changed everything. The Drow had something to work for, revenge. The original ships from the Illithid were captured tradesmen refitted with lifejammers. It was not long before a lifejammer installed in one of the spider husks and the spinneret was born. When the Drow planned on a new temple, a large cavern would be partially closed off. Usually by time the spider got the debris cleared the spider would have grow too big to get out of the cavern. This would make it impossible for a jammer to leave. This problem was solved by melding a stone floor around the rear legs, allowing the spider to grow without chance of escape (these legs are cut off at death). Its size was only limited to the width of the exit and its food supply. The largest spider ship known is a 90 ton Great Mother called "Corinthian's Reward". Most die at less than 10 tons. During the growing process, many spells are cast to increase growth. After death, many spells are used to enchant the shell, using a method that is rumored to be from slave received from the illithed. It said that this slave's culture uses ships that similar to what the Drow had in mind. The first spinnerets were merely hollow shells with dried internals for decking. Other materials were soon used. Moltings are the most common especially in Spinnerets. Hard fungi, stone, Ironwood (from defeated elven ships), bones, quartz, and even coral have been used to make walls and flooring. Corinthian's Reward is rumored to be lavastone covered with elven skin. One material that not used often is Drow Adamantine. However, it is used in two areas. On the Great Mother class ships, deep in the hull is laid a fine adamantine web to give strength to the ship hull. The other use is to strengthen the forelimbs. Soon after death, the muscle tissue is removed from the forearm, animated, attached an adamantine sleeve, and reinserted in the arms. Each ship is unique, although certain categories are made to define use. Sentries are the smallest. At 5 tons or less, they are built to be fast and usually unarmed, for scouting and for couriers. Spinnerets are the most common, with short-range accommodations and tonnage up to 11, they are made strictly for boarding. Constructed for landing, the gargantuan sized (12 to 23 ton) XXXX use its legs to land for planet-side ventures. >From cargo transport to all-out attacking, the 24 to 48 ton Deathspiders are the workhorse of the fleet. The Great Mothers are the rarest and largest at more than 48 tons, are saved when the Drow really need to be aggressive.
