        Some of us like the framework provided by the canon.  I recognize
that pretty much every DM in the world will deviate from canon to a lesser
or greater extent, but the canon *does* provide a common toolbox for those
of us who like to create things for particular settings.  If I create
something that's consistent with the canon, then I can be reasonably
assured that most DMs will be able to use whatever it is I've created in
their campaigns if they think it's useful/interesting/worthwhile/etc.

        Also, I still hold out hope that Spelljammer (and Planescape) can
be resurrected in some sort of official form.  The more canonical
roadblocks that are thrown up in the way of that, the more difficult it's
going to be to resurrect these settings in a way that will be familiar to
long-time fans.
