I can probably answer that for Tilaurin, since the
stuff on Crescent came from my sphere guide, which in
turn was culled from the SJ novel series.The material
I collected for my sphere guide came from all the TSR
published SJ material or anything with a reference to
SJ that they had in print.

 Marrak was the god that was used in the novel series
so he made it into the description of Crescent simple
as that. Though he could easily be replaced by one of
the other gods of knowledge, but I don't see either
the religion of Ogmha or Thoth being quite as rigid or
inflexible as The True Path, though they could easily
be a splinter group of extremists.
