Neither was a lifejammer. The whole 'coffin + > chair' > setup didn't come about in the original box; it came about in Dungeon > adventures. In fact, the *only* place I recall that setup being used > was in 'Sea of Sorrows'. You're missing my point. A lifejammer requires 2 people to run, a death helm requires just the victim. Admittedly either could use a seat (with straps in the lifejammer's case), a leash and collar, a rack, a cage, a coffin, manacles, etc. for holding the victim. The difference is that a death helm charms the victim so no "controller" is required. A lifejammer requires a victim and an actual [controlling] helmsman and is very akin to the furnace helm, only with a different power source. As for whether a coffin/box is used vs. an iron maiden that's a different point. If you're going to use an iron maiden then you're going to inflict extra damage, a lot of extra damage. Not to mention increased checks for disease and infection (perhaps those of you who play 2e and 3e don't have such checks anymore, I haven't paid enough attention to either system to know). Simply you'll run your victim out much more quickly. Not that I care, and possibly many who use lifejammers and death helms don't, but if that's your chosen method the extra harshness should have additional rules. If you want to use a rack or stocks, for example (anyone who's ever seen some of the historical stocks and racks can imagine that neither was anything like comfortable, in fact they were probably more fiendish than the iron maiden since that was likely to grant you a much quicker death), I wouldn't suggest such additional rules need to be added. As for your history of how they are made I do have questions about how the ogres get hold of them (if they were really given away that freely why is SJ not known to every culture and world?) but I like it. I doubt I would have ever come up with lower-planar made helms. Which of course begs the question of who makes Arcane helms... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
