Lets see, should be medium sized. I'd guess in the neighborhood of 20
days to 30 days to the outermost planet, and 40 to 60 days to the
spherewall from the primary (1 day = 100 million miles).
Thing to remember about Heartspace is that it is *old*. Ancient, by
how spheres are measured. So I'd suggest lots of ruins everywhere of
cultures long lost. Hell, it would make an excellent place for an
illithid throne world; in fact, the current condition of the sun was
caused by illithid mettling. Maybe one of the worlds was 'destroyed' in
a battle between illithids & their slaves, maybe burning off the
atmosphere and leaving dozens of cities vacant, ala Kule? Perhaps
that's why Crecent is such an important library; there are so many ruins
everywhere that the sphere became a mecca for sages looking for
knowledge of the past.
I wouldn't limit myself to just one ancient empire, either. There's no
reason that there couldn't be a (ex?)world of Kreen that was abandoned
after the Crusade 4,000 years ago. Or how about an ancient, now fallen
Ptah-worshipping kingdom? Or even ancient dinosaurs, maybe saurials
held some power here long, long ago.
If you go with the many ancient empires theory, plus add several
disasters that caused the fall of said empires, you could have hundreds
of asteroids & small worlds everywhere. Lots of ruins; much of the
sphere's civilizations make their coin from looting the ruins & catering
to adventurers looting the ruins, kinda like Greyhawk's early history.
