Well, the thing is, the "death" thing is only part of the problem. In
2e, when separated, the familiar started losing hitpoints, 1 each day or
so. So it was a nice built in "clock" to add to teh suspense. In 3e, all
that happens when separated by 1 mile is no empathic communication. So
I'd have to have another "timer" on the adventure or it wouldnt be as
exciting. Yes, I could probably figure one out, but then all thats left
is a "wizard needs to find his familiar" story, which is like rescuing a
princess, essentially. The 2e version took advantage of part of the game
and explored issues involved in having a familiar... a 3e version would
just be a bit too contrived and would loose its specialness. Overall,
I'm more excited about a different SJ adven idea, which I have to finish
writing the idea for and send into Dungeon. I'll probably do it when I'm
in the right mood, but right now I'm in a mood to develop my d20 world
secret-project. Maybe when I feel really, really silly, I'll work on my
SJ one some more (it should be extremely fun and silly once written...
but not stupid).
