well...
1: i never thought of Giff as one of the "silly" elements of SJ, so
i'm a bit surprised to hear them referred to as such.  neogi?  yes.
beholder nations?  yes.  hamsters?  hell, anything connected to
tinker gnomes is silly.  but giff?
2: i loved the 1st 2 Dragonlance trilogies.  however, the one element
that i didn't care for, the thing that kept me from reading any of
the rest of the books, and the thing that completely ruined my
ability to take the world seriously, and thus maintain my suspension
of disbelief, was the silly races.  i'd *love* a Dragonlance without
tinkers, kender, or gully dwarves.  individuals like that?  sure.
races that can survive?  no thank you.  if i ever stumble upon it,
i'll probably grab a copy of the box set detailing the other side of
the world, just because i hear it doesn't have any of those, but
maintains all the cool elements (or at least is equally cool in other
ways).
