Ok, the Merchant helm was a wee bit too power, but there is plenty of niches to be filled by new helm types imho. As for my own deliria, I am thinking about a new, less expensive helm providing just propulsion - no air bubble, no gravity, like the mundane space propulsion we Earthlings use. Such an helm (or what the evil-aligned outer plane yawannacallit) would be unable of phlo-travel, yet it would attain j-speed. Ships equipped with this helm (let's call it a j-prop) have to be totally enclosed and very resilient because of the great threat space debris poses to crew survival: a hull holed critical results in an immediate decompression! Let's put up some stats: the j-prop air bubble: none g provided: none SR: depending on total mass propelled from 1 to 10 metric tons: up to SR 10, accelerate by 2 SR in 1 turn, man A from 11 to 20 metric tons: up to SR 5, accelerate by 1 SR in 1 turn, man B from 21 to 40 metric tons: up to SR 3, accelerate by 1 SR in 2 turns, man C from 41 to 60 metric tons: up to SR 2, accelerate by 1 SR in 3 turns, man D from 61 to 100 metric tons: up to SR 1, accelerate by 1 SR in 5 turns, man E (1 metric ton is about the mass of 1 cubic yard of water) j-speed: yes, only if has reached maximum SR Arr, now, lads! Avast, and shiver me timbers! Whaddya say to that?
