        Nah, I think it's less.  Modern day Earth only has 6 billion
people, and several hundred years ago it was way less.  The number
200 million sticks out in my head, but I think that was *way* long
ago (around 500 AD).  Let's play it safe and say half a billion around
the middle ages.
