I'd probably give them a perfectly cylindrical shaft, maybe a mile or so in diameter, and hidden by either mountains or a convenient valley. It is, of course, hidden because it would give those irritating "adventurers" access into my lair, and I want to make it as hard as possible on them. Likewise, it will be a perfectly smooth shaft, with no hand-or-footholds; after all, only levitating vessels are going to use it. The only access to the drow fastnesses would be maybe a mile or so down, probably a tunnel wide enough for ships to come through. (What, you expect them to leave them in the hole for anyone with a mile-long rope to plunder?) I mean, if they *do* leave their ships in the hole, it's almost undoubtedly a corkscrew or somesuch like Tilaurin suggests, for security. Though you'd have a sort of reservoir for your ships, most likely. Launches are undoubtedly taken care of in the dead of night, for the maximum of comfort for all drow involved, and to avoid their being noticed. And I assume there would be giant spiders and the like to guard the hole. So, um, yeah, if earthbound drow want to spelljam, they need a way up. Either they leave their ships up top and just walk up, or they cut ludicrously huge exit shafts. ~George Lavalle "So let me get this straight...You want to fly on a magic carpet to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your freedom, and you think you're completely sane?"
