Well, the arm of the catapult partially goes into these tubes.  it's really
hard to explain, and I can't draw for peanuts, but I can see exactly how it
works in my own mind and it does ;)

and yeah I know about the lighter weapons, but the same can be said about
the great bombard.  some races just like big weaponry :)
