I have since had a chance to peruse the official writeup, and
I would agree that magical beast is not quite appropriate.

In addition to the Dragon guidelines for creating creatures,
I highly recommend comparing a creature to similar creatures
in the 3e MM. While the Dragon article may say one thing,
when the designers decide to vary, it is often a good precedent.
I think that if a medium-size dolphin can do 2d4 with a type
of attack, then surely a larger, stronger creature attacking
in the same manner should do the same or more damage.

with Beasts... so I thought.....
Virtually all creatures in the MM have darkvision. See page 5.
The beasts also has low-light vision. These are assumed qualities
that go with the creature type, and don't need to be listed, which
is why it is not listed for creatures in the MM, despite the fact
they all have it.
Again, its a nit-picky thing; you are not wrong to include it,
just that for official-style writeups it is unnecessary.

You havea good start. I would probably use remaining points
to add to these.

Oh, a little bit here and there. I am running a 3e game based
on 2e modules, and have had to convert the creatures that
don't have 3e versions yet.
