well, the use of "umbra" for the spirit world in Werewolf: the
Apocalypse probably stems as much from the English meaning of umbra
as the Latin.  in English, an object under directional light creates
three things that are conventionally referred to as "shadow".  the
part of the object that is unilluminated is the shadow.  anything
that the object blocks light to is in shade.  and that space where
there is nothing for light to fall onto or not fall onto, but where
if put that something would be in shade is the umbra.  so, the umbra
is by definition a non-existent entity.  a very appropriate
metaphorical word for a spirit world that coexists with our own, yet
is not really there.
