Actually, I have two copies of the main set.  : )

But, since we will likely never see a re-release of Spelljammer,
it is nice to have an option available.  Paper books fall apart
eventually.

Also, having the main set be free would increase the potential
growth of the SJ fan base.

Don't get me wrong, I'd rather have it for $3.49 than not available
at all, but there are more considerations than a few bucks...

1) Right now few people can download the ESDs.  The current
policies restrict the ESDs from many of countries, including
those in Europe.  That is a big chunk of people.  Now, they may
very well might get things going by the time SK is available, but they
might not.  This will stunt the potential growth of the SJ fan base.

2) The ESDs cannot be reditributed.  With the free stuff, you can
take files, make changes, and then redistribute it. So, people could
take the core set, update it to 3e, and then make it available on their
site.  But this won't happen since that is not allowed with the
pay stuff.

So, it is better than nothing, but still not as cool as it could be.
