If I remember Correctly, and I may be way off here, the explanation offered was as follows: Long ago, before the dawn of recorded history on Athas, the Githyanki were using Atlas as a staging base from which to launch some kind of attack. The Githzerdi unleashed a very powerful anti-magic/Psionic bomb on the planet to kill off the enemy. This a few major side effects. First, it unwove the weave, leaving All Athaisian magic to be life based. Second it cut off the Astral and Outerplanes, ending all gods, and leaving like a 10% chance of ever getting into or out of the Astral Plane. Third, it psionically imbued all forms of life. Finally, it 'sealed' the crystal sphere, a kind of reflex action to keep the anti-magic effects from leaking out into the rest of the world. It has been officially said that Dark Sun is not a far future realm, and its important to note that the 'known' Dark Sun world is approximately the size of Colorado. But both of those are off topic. Personally if I were going to do some inter space pirating, I'd be using whale ships to transport water to and from Athas, rather than Steel to Krynn. Dark Lord B0unty I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve, I have a history of losing my shirt.
