A large part of the problem was that the module 'Under the Dark Fist' was
largely unworkable without significant alterations. Imagine running a
standard Hammership up against a ship doing SR7or8 containing upwards of 60
F7s, all of whom happen to be immune to normal weapons, carry magical
weapons and go berserk (with the addition of a W14 - W17 or two). Assuming
your pcs manage to survive just one encounter of this sort, what happens to
their crew?
Now imagine that that Vodoni ship is equipped with weapons that have twice
the range of the hammership's...............
Now consider what sort of fleet of ships you would require to combat a LARGE
fleet of Vodoni vessels............

In fairness the Vodoni aren't an incredibly bad idea, but the module and the
Vodoni did need a lot of powering down, and that led to some unpopularity.
Still, some good work has been done on developing the spheres presented in
the module and also on the Vodoni. For the former, take a look at the web
site 'Beyond the Moons' (sorry no link).

As to 3E solving the problem...........I dunno, not all that familiar with
it as yet.

Toodles
Michael
