Ultravision is the ability to see radiation above violet in the normal
visible spectrum. Unless this this ability is of highly unusual nature, so
as to be able to be able to see far into this spectrum, ultravision will not
be very useful underground(where radiation is screened out) without some
source of ultravisual emanation. Magic weapons which shed illumination spoil
ultravisual capability, just as heat does infravision. As noted in PLAYERS
HANDBOOK, ultravision enables the viewer to see outdoors at night as if he
or she were in twilight, so vision extends clearly for about 100 yards,
dimly to about 300. On particularly cloudy nights, ultravisual capability is
reduced to about half normal, i.e. clear sight to 50 yards, dim to 150
yards."

Page 160 of the 2e DMG denounces it as being useless as only a few types of
celestial bodies emit that kind of radiation in significant amounts.

3e PHB makes no mention of it. :|

Page 34 of the 1e FIEND FOLIO states Drow Elves as having "superior
infravision of the 12" range variety". Which I am certain is a type-o
intended to be 120 feet instead of twelve inches. although...
And 2e CBoE lists the drow with INFRAvision 120'. That's on page 33. :}

One of my old DMs had a house rule that made infravision above ground be
'low light'vision and below ground surface it changed to actual infravision.
This due to members of the previous group, on being a science buff and the
other having access to a pair of goggles.
Personally(as a DM) I don't use this (I like describing the trippy view) but
after being reminded of ultravision, I thought would it not be interesting
to have infravision change to ultravision when one goes off planet. Shifting
transparencies tinted with subtle pastels... but definitely quirky for a
"real world" physics. Well, there you go! Thought, questions, comments
anyone?
