Several other people have pointed out that Tolkien's elves did it, but I thought I'd contribute as well. Specifically, the most notable place in the Lord of The Rings where this happens is during the chase across Rohan. While Gimli and Aragorn sleep, Legolas just walks around on the grass, singing to himself, or just sits there with his eyes open. And its mentioned that he can even "sleep" on the move, resting even as he runs. I'm not sure if the "reliving memories" part is specifically mentioned to be associated with sleep. However, while on the boats going down the Anduin, Gimli makes a comment about how he's heard that to elves, memories are like reliving the event in question, not "pale shadows", as they are for other races, and Legolas doesn't deny it. ===== Isn't preventing STDs by abstinence a lot like preventing food poisoning by not eating?
