The "mad wizard creation" is trite, if over-used. It may be that they were, but it should be far from common knowledge. In my own campaign the rise and fall of interstellar nations has happened so many times that the knowledge of the origins and homeworlds of most species have been lost to the mists of time, and so I don't have to worry about how the Giff came to be (yet.)
