I think part of the reason was a bit of a retro-fit, in order to answer the
question: "Well, why *are* elves so immune to sleep-type spells, anyhow?"

Thematically speaking, it works well for elves, as well. In many ways, elves
are portrayed as creatures of the past, who have often mastered many forms
of expressing things with beauty, be it art, dance or what have you, but
somehow lacking in the vitality of humanity -- creativity. As such, its
appropriate for them to not dream -- to not create vistas and new ideas in
their sleep, but rather for them to reverie, to simply relive what has gone
before.

And, as an aside, I don't see reverie as anything vaguely zen-like; zen is
very structured and formal. Reverie is something more like daydreaming; I
can easily picture the reclined form of an elf whose face changes
expression, ever so lightly, and whose hands flutter about them sometimes,
all in reaction to those remembered and relived memories.
