you know you are not actually to far off, there is a specific comment that was in the book that looked like they threw it in there with out any real reason. it stated that everything that rests on the gravity plane is not afected by the motions of the ship except the air that when the ship moves the air does not move with it. just thought i would throw that in -----Original Message----- From: Discussion list for the Spelljammer campaign setting [mailto:SPELLJAMMER-L@??????.???????.com]On Behalf Of Wolfwraith Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2000 6:05 PM To: SPELLJAMMER-L@??????.???????.com Subject: Re: [SPELLJAMMER] Speed of thought I see a lot of people discussing how sails work to spelljam a ship. I pose this question: How does the energy from the mage and helm propel the ship? Does it push or pull the ship? As a part or as a whole? If it pushed, like the wind, then that might be an answer to why the sails looked billowed. If it was pulled, then they might look like they should be flowing in the opposite direction Ok, I know that this, as an explanation, sounds silly. There is no wind in wildspace. Correct? The gravity of the ship keeps the atmosphere with the ship even at spelljamming speeds. But we are talking about an energy form that may or may not push at the ship thereby, possibly, causing the sails to look as though billowed. I'm reminded of an episode of Deep Space 9 where Sisko and Jake flew a ship that was powered by the solar winds. That energy pushed at the sails causing the ship to "fly" at warp speeds. In that episode they had to trim sails and such to maximize the use of the solarwinds. If we think of the helm energy as a force from behind that pushes at the ship then we could use sails, and rudders, to help in directing the ship. Is this explanation good enough for those of you who need to apply science and technology to my favorite fantasy game?? (No offense intended) Which brings me to my next comment. Did we have these conversations already during the SJ Physics postings?? ******************************************************************** The D&D; Homepage: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/Welcome.asp Find Local Players: http://nafsasp.wizards.com/Registries/TSR/Welcome.asp To unsubscribe, send email to LISTSERV@??????.???????.com with UNSUB SPELLJAMMER-L in the body of the message.
