As far as I understood it as soon as a ship enters another air envelope (ship or planet) the airs mixed...end of story. The examples given from the novels are simply artistic license! > does the helmsman have control as to weather the > air envelope mix or not. maybe the air envelope and the gravity are > independent of each other when it comes to this particular matter. Without a gravity field the ship cannot physically hold it's own air envelope. The ship's own gravity plane collapses as soon as the ship enters the gravity plane or field of a more massive object such as a planet....woe betide any captain who tries to land on a planet with gravity but no atmosphere! > If I have an aquatic race (or amphibian that has the ability to > breathe > water in whatever way) and they use a ship that has a water envelope > rather than an air one, is this possible? I can see no reason why a ship could not have a water envelope rather than an air envelope. From my discussion above the only way this could happen is if the ship originates from a water world where there is no atmosphere and the water extends to the edge of the planets gravity field, so that as the ship leaves the planet it takes water with it rather than air. If the DM rules that the ship has a water envelope instead of an air envelope then there cannot be an additional air envelope around the water...otherwise that would indicate an extra large gravity field and consequently the water 'bubble' would collapse. Most aquatic races' ships, however, would only carry water in the body of the vessel so the crew would work under water (e.g. Lizardman converted Wasps). Anyone agree or disagree? Jeff
