trivia fact: the meridian was very nearly put in the azores (the
westernmost point of the east atlantic shore) so that all of europe
africa and asia would have positive longditudes. also, for about 100
years after GMT was formalised french maps still showed the meridian
goign through paris :)

to confuse the issues, we're currently on summer time in britain, so
that could account for the missing hour..
