Wow, od we really need such a harsh biology lesson?  Why not agree on
this?...

Illithid tadpoles are waterbreathers (they live in the Elder Brain's
pool) until they are introduced into a host.  Upon that time, they
assume the respiratory system of the host.  Hence, they were at one time
able to live in water, now they live on land.  unless of course, they're
introduced into a sea elf or a merman.
